Tea Rest, a new bubble tea shop on Sea Road in Sunderland, is offering an authentic taste of Taiwan. Opened last autumn by business partners Ka Leung Wong and Yung-ni Wu, the cafe has transformed a former tattoo shop into a hub for Taiwanese tea culture.
Originally from Taiwan, the duo has deep roots in the bubble tea tradition. The shop serves the iconic tea-based drinks, complete with chewy tapioca pearls or colorful popping boba, offering a customizable experience for customers.
“We named the shop Tea Rest because we know how much people enjoy relaxing with a cup of tea,” Yung-ni explained. “Our logo, a T-Rex, was chosen because it’s fun, and it connects with the name.”
The shop features a range of high-quality teas imported directly from Taiwan, brewed with specialized equipment like the Teapresso machine. Popular choices include Assam Tea, Earl Grey, and Highland Oolong, all priced from £4.
Located on a community high street surrounded by schools, Tea Rest has quickly become a favorite hangout spot for students after school. As the weather warms up, the partners are excited for the bubble tea craze to grow even more in the local area.
