Plans have been submitted to transform the Patisserie Valerie café at the historic Tram Shed in Gunwharf Quays into a new Bubble CiTea bubble tea shop.
The application, sent to Portsmouth City Council, seeks listed building consent to make interior changes while preserving the Tram Shed’s unique heritage features.
The proposal includes replacing the current café bar and updating window coverings to create a “cleaner look” that fits Bubble CiTea’s modern brand.
Importantly, the plan maintains the Grade II listed building’s original cast iron columns, timber roof, and glass panels—key elements of the 1920s structure.
Bubble CiTea, operated by CITEA OUTLETS Limited, already runs a popular kiosk near the tunnel entrance on the east side of Gunwharf.
The new location inside the Tram Shed will offer a wide range of freshly made fruit and milk teas, with customizable sugar levels, tea bases, and tapioca or alternative toppings. The menu includes vegan and halal-friendly options as well as seasonal specials.
Bubble tea, originating in Taiwan during the 1980s, has gained global popularity for its unique combination of tea, milk or fruit flavors, and chewy tapioca pearls.
Bubble CiTea aims to bring this trendy drink experience to a landmark spot in Portsmouth, enhancing the vibrant food and beverage scene at Gunwharf Quays.
